Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 1998

$99.99

The 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape is the greatest effort produced since Beaucastel's 1989 and 1990. It reveals more accessibility, no doubt because the final blend included more Grenache than normal. Its dense purple color is followed by sweet aromas of blackberries, licorice, new saddle leather, and earth. There is superb concentration, full body, low acidity, and high tannin, but it is surprisingly drinkable for such a young Beaucastel. Robert Parker

Quite the difference from 2000 vintage I had in October. Powerful and intense requiring a lengthy decant, layered with both red and black fruits, lots of spices, hints of licorice and game. Finishes long with excellent depth and richness. ❤️

Gorgeous! Elegant, soulful, texturally pleasing with its richness and suave imprint. Complimentary facets of juicy grenache and mourvedre sauvage; rich roasted fruit, savory earth, spices, minerals, flowers, and animal. Salty underpinnings that really began to gain complexity with air, leather towards the end of the bottle. Brett interwoven and in check to me.

Another fantastic pull - 1998 is drinking so well and yet can see another 10+ years.

This is a very nice, 21 year old, Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Showing great complexity and mouthfeel. Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, earth, wood, vanilla, vegetables, wet leaves, black tea, black pepper and spices. Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries. Needs an hour to open up properly, but good right out of the bottle as well. This 1998 was a great vintage. This is a wonderful experience, yummy and delicious. Served from a Magnum. 93 points.

Opened two bottles, both were in great shape. Manageable Brett, slight bottle variation, one seemed to be more concentrated than the other. Fun stuff, corks were in great shape. These aren’t getting better.

From #magnum I was a touch concerned with the past storage conditions of this bottle based off the color, a loose structure and oxidative notes. Complexity and character were good but the structure was lacking taking away from the potential energy and length. #1998 #chateauneufdupape #chateaudubeacastel #rhonevalley #ctbucklinwine

Surprise bottle at the end of the tasting. A real treat. Garnet red with medium intensity and quite a bit of sediment. Layered nose with soft blackberries, soft black cherries, and a soft undertone of provenance herbs (lavender). Palate floats right across your tongue with some light red cherries, some toasted wood and a little leather. Still solid moderate tannins (5.5/10) and well integrated with the solid acidity. Medium to light bodied with great structure and texture. Moderate plus finish with a dryness to it. Drink till 2020.

1998 - drink up now. This is not going to get any better. Very evolved, soy sauce, barnyard, and pruny. I know this is a controversial wine but this is disappointing.

In a very good place right now. Tannins are grippy but starting to mellow. Fruit still very vibrant. Long persistent finish. White pepper, thyme, beautiful dried red fruits.

Dark ruby. Nose of plums, earth, herbs and brush. With air the wine got better in the mouth and had a finish that grew with each sip. Can get better with some additional age. Give it lots of air.
