Château Cos d'Estournel Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2002

$145

One of the candidates for wine of the vintage, this beauty has a dense purple color to the rim and a classic, noble nose of graphite intermixed with black currant, spice box, licorice, and red and black fruits. Medium to full-bodied with exceptional precision and definition, this beautifully textured wine stands out as one of the most successful wines of this irregular vintage... Robert Parker

This is a glorious expression of Bdx. A left bank example which is strutting its stuff. 18 years in, its beginning to reveal cigar and cedar notes on the nose. Palate displays cherries, spice box, cinnamon and kirsch. No rush to consume these. Easily another 10 years of runway ahead of it.

I am admittedly a #cosgirl and this wine was everything that I love about great Bordeaux, silky fruit-laden texture without overt density or weight, and gorgeous graphite, dried herb, leather, licorice and earth notes.

Weekly Wine Committee. 1 sparkler, 3-4 whites, 3-4 reds and 1 dessert wine format. Served blind. I called this left bank Bordeaux from the get go. It showed a ripe side at first but quickly settled in to some saddle leather, pepper, tar, tobacco and bay leaf. Power is in the mid palate and finish here as tannins were still strong. Black tea, black cherry, oak and a streak of greeness down the palate. No rush.

Wifey is unwell, and subtly directed me to focus on the French stuff, so here we are... For once, “I got my mind right, boss,” and let this breathe for 5 hrs, and lawdy, this is singing. The nose offers up new oak, cinnamon and a hint of molasses. The palate presents ripe and balanced. Tannins are still bold, but frame the wine superbly. Finishes with black fruits and uncommon sweetness for a bdx example. After my week-day sabbatical from alcohol, this represents a great three-finger salute (control-alt-delete).

Brett and new oak do more disservice to the wine than the 2002 vintage.

Opened like a normal 2002, all vegetal, but two hours later it was bursting with fruit! Give it time and it will impress you.

This was such a treat to enjoy. Excellent representation of the vintage and region. Lovely left bank style with very restrained mid-dark fruits, cassis, clove.

02 Cos deserves a pat on the back for this effort during a challenging vintages. The wine was tight on the palate, still staying closed the next day, but had an interesting nose with licorice and exotic spice wafting around one's head. The next day I discovered an extra complexity of tomato leaf that I like but may not be to everyone's liking.

Huge tobacco, cassis, mineral primal core. Some big oak. Juicy, ripe, boring. Meh.
