Château Cos d'Estournel Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1986 (375ml)

$125

The 1986 is a highly extracted wine, with a black/ruby color and plenty of toasty, smoky notes in its bouquet that suggest ripe plums and licorice. Evolving at a glacial pace, it exhibits massive, huge, ripe, extremely concentrated flavors with impressive depth and richness. It possesses more power, weight, and tannin than the more opulent and currently more charming 1985. Robert Parker

Everything you want out of St Estephe (even though the chateau is famously close to Pauillac from a terroir perspective...) Black currant, plums, leather, green tobacco, iodine, olive tapenade, but velvety soft so the austerity doesn’t extend to the tannic structure.

Dark scarlet. Almost opaque. Fruit forward nose. Notes of raspberry, ripe plum, menthol, tobacco leaf, mint and some blue fruit. In the first few hours this shows nicely with a good balance of fruit and structure. Later in the night the fruit fades a bit, and you're left with acidity and some dryness. Had this rated higher early on but it declined a bit over the evening.

Very good but the tannins came thru after a while . Probably won’t get any better since the fruit will start to die as it gets older .

Heavy bottle stink on pop, then decant. Couldn't really touch this for about 2.5-3 hours until the nose collected itself. Well tanned leather, moist soil and ripe cherry notes eventually evident in the nose. Mineral cherry on the palate, the bottle was really starting to sing at about 4 hours, then it was gone. Really love the Cos d' in all vintages!

Beautiful color; minimal sediment. Consistent with online notes, but seemingly mishandled at some point; flat but with moments of beauty.

Compact, if thin, dried fruits, cedar, and graphite. Structure that wouldn't quit. Great balance.

wow. Where is my beef? So many secondary flavors in this wine, and they continued to evolve throughout the finish. Restrained at times, this wine was not dominated by just one character. Graphite, blackberries, leather, spice rack, medium plus acid and tannins still.
