Château Calon-Ségur Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1995 (1500ml)

$389

I always loved this wine from the first time I tasted it in 1998. It has such purity and power yet it's reserved and beautiful. It's one of the best Calons ever. I drank a bottle with some friends in Manhattan last week and it was the wine of the evening. It was full-bodied with silky tannins and a focused and intense finish. Lots of currant and berry character and hints of dried spices. It's finally opening up and giving real pleasure now like so many 1995 Bordeaux at the moment. 97 points. James Suckling

On the gradual ride down. Nice secondary fruit. Cranberry, tomato, cedar. Just lovely.

Still ruby, not quite opaque. OK red currant nose, with sour cherries and saddle leather. Absent finish. This seems like it's either closed down, or it's missing fruit to match the strong acidity and tannic structure of the wine, or both. Even with 5 hrs of air, it didn't change much.

Dark cassis, lead pencil shavings, graphite, leather, dark earth, gravel. Soft and elegant but this 20 plus year old Bordeaux still needs another 10 plus years to hit its stride.

Decanted for a couple of hours but needed a bit more because by the last drop it was even more beautiful. Loved it.

Hitting its peak. Perfumed loveliness, #2 pencil shavings before getting a 780 on the writing section of the SAT's.
