Caymus Vineyards Special Selection Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

$189

A barrel sample of the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection offers terrific fruit intensity and purity, a more laid-back style, a meaty, chewy texture, and impressive opulence as well as length. It should evolve for 10-15 years. Robert Parker

Fun blind tasting of Napa Valley Cabernets, we decided to choose two from 2011 while my Dad selected two different vintages of Caymus Special Selection. Deep and dark purplish ruby red. Layers of oak influence, toasted, vanilla, cinnamon and dark cherries. Heavy tannins (7.5/10) and full bodied. Rich palate with bramble berries, black fruits, dark cocoa and a touch herbal. Long and lingering finish. Drink till 2026. Had around 5 or 6 hours in the decanter and needed it.

Fun coravined wine to finish off the celebration tasting. Dark and deep garnet red. A touch dirty on the nose, smoky, toasty, spiced and a little bit of sweet spices. Heavy tannins (7.5/10) and full bodied. Rich and dark palate with plums, dark and black berries. Some cinnamon and rich vanilla notes too. Long and lingering finish. Drink till 2021. Not a giant fruit bomb like the more recent vintages of Caymus Special Selection but a real treat. Definitely could of used a bit of air on the nose but delicious none the less.

Caymus is Caymus and will have plenty of fans - I'm not one of them since the mid 90's. Having smelt Mega Purple (a grape concentrate allowed in winemaking) before this gives me associations of a strongly manipulated wine. At the price point this is a definite no-go for me. Your miles may vary...

Never really a big Caymus fan, but tried this along side the 01 and 03 and this outclassed them easily. Drinking amazingly well now but still huge and ripe. Drink through 2030.

Slight sulfur funk that's taking some time to blow off but killer dark fruit. Ripe tannin. Lush and rich. Drinking perfect

100% Cabernet Sauvignon Deep, opaque, rather dull ruby. Compact rim. The nose gives away milk chocolate-coated blue blueberry, some anise, cinnamon, with a slight hint of graphite and tobacco. Structurally, this wine is soft but substantial. Silky and velvety. Lots of creamy blueberry fruit - almost like a milkshake. Ripe plum, dried fig, and some cassis. Low acid which makes this wine rather mono-dimensional. Even though declared at 15 plus abv, the heat is very well hidden. Toasted new oak, cedary wood, with some smoky backend. Clearly this wine is well loved but it runs against what I believe is the model for a classic Napa Cab. With this much abv, low acid, and soft tannin, it will not evolve into anything else beyond its current state. Look elsewhere for more exciting alternatives. 82.
