Castello di Monsanto Riserva Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2010

$18.95

Readers should do whatever they can to get their hands on Monsanto's 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva, a wine that captures the full pedigree of this great Tuscan vintage, and at a reasonable price. Brisk, saline notes form the backbone, as this expressive, nuanced Riserva shows off its focus, delineation and pure clarity. One of the best wines of the year in its price range, the 2010 is all class. Juicy dark berries, flowers, tobacco and spices add complexity over time, but it is the wine's overall finesse that makes the most lasting impression of all. Monsanto has been a bit inconsistent in recent years, but when they get it right the results are striking, as the 2010 Riserva amply proves. This is a fabulous showing. Traditional Chianti Classico recommended by my son Derek. 90% Sangiovese 7% Canalolo 3% Colorino. Very good from 2010 vintage grown in Mansanto.

Old school. Violets, tar and dried plum. Rather weighty, but more than enough lift and cut. A really good drink.

Some reduction but drinking well. The fruit is riper than in other bottles of this I've tried.

For a young CCR, this is doing really well. Red fruit comes forward with a backbone of dried leather, flowers and earth. All around food pairing wine indeed.

Drinking beautifully right now. Balanced and very (red sauce) food-friendly.

Begs for rich food. A little rounder that I remember from previous vintages. Still a really good food wine
