Cardinale Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 1997

$269

The spectacular 1997 Cardinale (91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot, of which 79% of the grapes came from Napa and 21% from Sonoma) was aged 22 months in 100% new French oak before being bottled unfiltered. This wine's vineyard sources include Rutherford, To-Kalon, Mt. Veeder, and Keyes Vineyard on Howell Mountain. The wine's opaque purple color is accompanied by a glorious nose of licorice, cassis, lead pencil, and minerals. Sweet, with a terrific attack displaying stupendous ripeness, full-bodied richness, and a natural texture with a super-concentrated mid-palate and finish, this is a star of the vintage. It is capable of evolving for 20-25 years. Precisely 3,903 cases were produced. Robert Parker

I was quite happy with this wine today. Right up there as one of the better wines enjoyed. Lots of youth for a 97. Almost a bit medicinal, but fruit structure was good. There was really nothing that stood out about this wine, other than my saying the wine appeared to have more youth than "advertised." I would have guessed 2004-2005. Still didn't win the youth award (that one definitely went to the 99 Spottswoode). I would have been insanely happy with this wine as the only wine on the table, instead of 1 out of 16 (plus) that were all uncorked in a frenzy of fourth friday wines.

1990s napa cabs are drinking beautifully right now. Still young, long finish. Wow!

The nose is mostly dried fruit and spice notes. The palate exhibits red plums, figs, dried cranberries and cocoa to accompany the vanilla, cedar and nutmeg. The finish finally tapered off after a full minute.
