Bodegas Muga Gran Reserva Prado Enea Rioja Tempranillo 2006

$57.99

This is amazing traditional Rioja with a complexity and beauty of ripe fruit and long aging. Unique. Full body, ultra-fine tannins, tobacco, vanilla, plums and prunes. It lasts for minutes on the palate. Three years aged in oak and three years in bottle. 80% tempranillo with the rest of the classic varieties. All from high altitude vineyards. James Suckling

#AgedWineTuesday Dark ruby in color with a wide brick/ reddish rim. Great nose of black currants, sweet cherries, blueberries, wood, cloves, vanilla, espresso, cola, light vegetables, tobacco leaf, cumin, saffron, graphite, herbs, Indian spices, earth and dark chocolates. Medium bodied with medium plus acidity. Dry on the palate with currants, cherries, sweet raspberries, tobacco, oak, spices, earth, dark chocolates, graphite, peppercorn and leather. Medium finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cranberries. This is a delicious 14 year old Rioja Gran Reserva. Drinking very nicely now, but still a little hot at the back of the throat. Tangy and soft with great complexity especially on the nose. Needs 2 hours open up, and even better after 3 hours. A nice wine to pair with food, but definitely good by itself too. Loved smelling on it for a long time. Thank you Scott for sharing this with me. Really enjoyed it. Robert Parker 96 points. Wine Spectator 92 points. I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses. A blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% Mazuelo and Graciano. 14% alcohol by volume. 93 points. $75.

After some heavy drinking of Cab, in particular Napa cab, it was great to go back to the old world and taste one of the more iconic Rioja. I had this about 4 years ago, and don’t think much has changed. Fruit was restrained but still vibrant, along with herbs, cedar, caramel, and developing tertiary notes of prune, fungus, and slight hint of port. The palate is still a bit on the acrid side, yet broad and round. Tannins still has some grips. Regal. And a long life ahead!

Sweet curry and Chinese five spice with a broad shouldered core of fruit. This is just getting going and has a long life ahead. Had an '87 at the winery back in June, these can age very well!

Deeply pitched firm black fruit, with dominant secondary aromas of cedar and incense, and oiled leather on the finish. The high altitude quality of the vineyards is apparent, endowed with silky, persistent tannins and impeccable freshness. Deserves ample time in the cellar to evolve.

Compelling Rioja proving the imperative to age these babies. So pure, silky. Light on its feet. Might’ve called it a burgundy blind.

Smokey, tobacco, cherry liquor on the nose. Palate is fresh and juicy, with black cherry fruit and vanilla toast. Acid and tannin are in balance. Delicious and age-worthy. Give this 5 more years.
