Bevan Cellars Ontogeny Oakville Red Wine 2014

There are 700 cases of the 2014 Ontogeny Proprietary Red, a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Petit Verdot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Totally dry, even though there is a wonderful sucrosity to the fruit. The wine has stunning blackberry and cassis notes, spring flowers, supple tannins and a long, multidimensional mouthfeel. It is a sexy beast for sure and best drunk over the next 15 or so years. Robert Parker

Blackberry and chocolate dominate the nose with hints of flowers and spice. Big, sweet, fleshy dark fruit on the palate. Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot sourced from various vineyards Bevan works with including Tin Box, Tench, Wildfoote, and Sugarloaf. At $95 this is a relatively affordable intro to Bevan's lineup of Bordeaux style bottlings.

This will be a very nice wine but needs time to integrate. Toasted oak spice and vanilla out of the gate, a mix of red and black fruit with blackcurrant liqueur and an almost unctuous palate. 14.9% and feels sweet and heavy to me because of it, but that is my bias. I think this wine achieves everything it wants to be.

I am in love with this wine! Not sure who started the Bevan chants on here, but it made me try one out for myself. This is the 2014 and even though it is quite young the flavors in this wine shine through pretty quickly. I'm tasting blueberry and cassis, with a wonderfully sweet midpalate of cherry and fig with a hint of green tobacco herbalness at the end. Big thank you to the Bevan fans, I'm on board now. Can't wait to try the Cab!

Drinking nicely now, but definitely could benefit from some time or a couple hour decant.
