Bevan Cellars Ontogeny Oakville Red Wine 2014

$115

There are 700 cases of the 2014 Ontogeny Proprietary Red, a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Petit Verdot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Totally dry, even though there is a wonderful sucrosity to the fruit. The wine has stunning blackberry and cassis notes, spring flowers, supple tannins and a long, multidimensional mouthfeel. It is a sexy beast for sure and best drunk over the next 15 or so years. Robert Parker

Juicy is how the Mrs described it. I would certainly agree. Very plush and complex. Tannins were very well integrated for such a young wine. Persistent finish.

You haven’t really lived until you’ve tasted Russell Bevan’s wine. His 2014 Ontogeny had me exclaiming “OH.... Daaaaayuuuum....” after my first sniff, and then again after each of the subsequent eight or ten sips with various and usually increasing changes in inflection. Blackberry compote drenched in crème de cassis accented with smoked brisket and white flowers. Tertiary notes of lavender, leather, a faint tinge of brett, and a little magic marker provide an exotic backdrop for a wine that exudes its own Napa style.

This wine always makes me happy! I think it might be my last bottle of the 2014. Good thing the 2015 will be arriving soon!

While good wine is tasty, Russell's entry level wine is properly delicious. Showing restraint, this wine is never the less huge, layered, and highly satisfying. The fruit and savory/earth elements (spice, leather, peppers, cocoa) are in perfect unison.

Blackberry and chocolate dominate the nose with hints of flowers and spice. Big, sweet, fleshy dark fruit on the palate. Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot sourced from various vineyards Bevan works with including Tin Box, Tench, Wildfoote, and Sugarloaf. At $95 this is a relatively affordable intro to Bevan's lineup of Bordeaux style bottlings.
