Sottimano Langhe Nebbiolo 2020
Aaron Tan
It’s either bottle variation or that the 2+ months of rest time has done this wonders. It was so different from the first bottle. This was all red berries, menthol, tobacco, and spice. Good energy, though the warmth does come through. Chewy tannins with a bittersweet finish, touched by some mineral and woody elements. Enjoyable, though I would have liked some floral notes.

The 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo is a great example of the year at its best. Freshly cut flowers, raspberry, spice, mint and cinnamon give this racy, beautifully perfumed Langhe Nebbiolo its undeniable appeal. The 2020 is an especially fine vintage for this bottling, as it has fabulous balance. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, September 2021)

You would think a 66% hit rate for heat-afflicted wines would have been a big enough red flag for me to buy wines from the new bottle shop in town, yet the draw of Sottimano’s Langhe was enough to tempt me out of reasoning. It’s usually such a banger, but I should have known - no wine or producer can escape the tragedy of bad cold chain. This wasn’t gone per say. More like a solid 4/10 on the heat stroke scale - still showing flashes of red fruit, yet lacking in all vitality and lifted aromatics. Where's all that dried florals and vibrant juiciness?! Sigh. Plus points for the nice chewy tannins.
