The 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is perfumed and amazingly fresh, showing bright cherry complemented by autumnal spice and dusty rose. It’s on the palate where the warmth of the vintage comes through, with waves of creamy, glycerol-like textures ushering in ripe balsamic-tinged blackberries, contrasted by peppery herbs and bitter dark chocolate. A thick coating of berry concentrate and fine tannins persists throughout the long finale, yet balance is maintained. This needs some time to soften, but it should be amazing in a few years’ time. Light medium garnet colour with a beautiful nose full of dark cherries, cherry candy cane, blackberry jam, dried dark fruits like raisins and whiffs of fruit cake with some warm spices and tobacco. The wine was decanted for 2 hours and the tannins from this still relatively young amarone initially wrap around the front of the mouth and become velvety and smooth throughout, while still supporting and balancing the nice acidity that is present and hotness in the back. On the palate, dark cherries, blackberries, balsamic, licorice, spice and oak. Nice long finish with notes of bitter dark chocolate and sour cherries. Very nice wine!
