Cabernet from Campania, typically around 50-70% with Aglianico and Merlot making up the balance. In 2004 the cepage is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Aglianico. One of the icon wines of Italy, Montevetrano can sometimes fly under the radar, known less to the mainstream crowd of wine drinkers but those that do know it love it. The best part is that Montevetrano has its own expression entirely, it does not try to be one of the other thousands of Bordeaux or Napa wannabes. Judicious oak, ample acidity, good fruit an mineral presence. Not to mention it is 12 years old and is just starting to show some tertiary notes. The color is pristine, a deep ruby red. #montevetrano

For the first 20 to 30 minutes this was all burnt rubber. Eventually earth and herbs came to the surface. In the mouth a Bordeaux profile with cab franc like green notes and earth. In a good drinking window .

The Aglianico, while only 10% of the blend, really shines through. Pencil shavings, leather, and maybe a hint of Brett dominate the nose at first, though eventually with time and air it opens up to reveal some black currant and black plum. Solidly structured with tannins that held up to a tomahawk ribeye even after all this time in bottle. Fun bottle.

You have to like green pepper notes to like this wine! Good dark fruit richness and lots of freshness for '96, but also a bit one dimensional.

Clear and clean, medium intensity in color, ruby. Toasted vanilla, nutty nose, perhaps cedar. Even as I take notes, it's changing. Coconut, cedar, pine/mint with blackberries in the background. Medium plus bodied, Medium plus tannins . Medium minus acidity. I love this wine. There's a tremendous complexity to it. I know I'm missing a lot and as I said it's changing. This is my second bottle--its consistent. Perfect wine for pairing with any beef or tomato centric dish. Really enjoyable!!! 93+ points
