Jim Anderson's Notes: "The duress the plants are under in the thin marine soils' upper layers in our estate vineyard causes the fruit to be relatively low in yields and smaller on a per cluster basis. This makes for darker and more naturally more structured wines. Even in a higher yielding, warmer (and therefore fruit-driven) year this bottling still exhibits broodingly dark fruit intertwined with loamy, earthy characteristics and finishes with gripping tannins that give the wine form. This is Pinot Noir for those with darker souls and, perhaps, some devious intentions..."

Vivid red. Deep-pitched aromas of fresh blackberry and cherry show hints of violet, cola and orange zest in the background. Supple and broad in the mouth; juicy dark fruit and floral pastille flavors are given lift and spine by a jolt of tangy acidity. Powerful yet lithe, finishing with solid thrust, sneaky tannins and very good length. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, Dec 2016)

JL Oregon tasting 9/12/17. $32. 679 cases. Got more of the funk and minty notes on nose than Balcombe more like Cousins. A sweeter yet more acidic balance on palate with a bit of bitter melon and spicy notes on finish. Interesting but not as pure delicious as Balcombe. Dry farmed with spring water that's hard with lots of minerals this that bite. Not so for Balcombe.
