Domaine du Pélican Arbois Poulsard 2015 (1500ml)

$99

Pelican's 2015 Poulsardandnbsp;is the domaineand#39;sandnbsp;first wine made entirely from Jacques Puffeney's former vineyards in Arboisandnbsp;(Monteiller, Au Bari, Lonchamp and Aux Loges), which are now in conversion to biodynamics. The Poulsard grapes were entirely de-stemmed for this vintage, the wine was raised in mostly neutral barrels and bottled with minimal sulfur. It's safe to say they've certainly done justice to these superlative terroirs. In the glass, the wine is a fascinating pale crimson shade that you can read a book through. The light color conveys the finesse and clarity that define this bottle, but there is much more to it than meets the eye. On the nose, you'll notice orange peel, wild strawberries and a saline, iron-tinged minerality. On the palate, the wine is especially bright, with lively acidity, delicate, powdery tannins and exceptional length.andnbsp; We'd challenge anyone who thinks that lighter colored reds have inherently less flavor and depth to sit down with a bottle of this Poulsard. This wine is flat out irresistible today, even with just a quick pop and pour, but it has such substance that we're excited to see how it evolves over the coming years in the cellar. If coming versions of Pelican Poulsard are as compelling as this debutante bottling, this will quickly become an essential iteration of this beguiling grape, along with those of Tissot, Domaine de la Pinte and the king, Overnoy.
