Baricci Colombaio Montosoli Rosso di Montalcino DOC Sangiovese 2018

$39.99

Baricci was the first signatory to the DOC in Brunello when it was formed in 1967 and is the only winery that makes all of its wines from the Montosoli vineyard. Montosoli is a small south-facing hillside with limestone soil that is considered by many to be a andquot;grand cruandquot; site for Brunello production. While there is no official hierarchy of site in Montalcino, and thus no grand crus, andnbsp;there is no doubt that Montosoli is a fabulous site for Sangiovese, a fact that really shines through in the wines. This 2018 Rosso di Montalcino is very fine and elegant, with polished tannins and very pure fruit. Neither a andquot;baby Brunelloandquot; nor a light and simple quaffer, this is exactly what Rosso di Montalcino is meant to be. Native yeast fermentationandnbsp;in steel, aged in 20 HL Slavonian Botti for 10 months.

Mid to pale crimson in colour. Red cherry, burnt toffee, earth and tar. Juicy on the light to medium weight palate. Oak is noticeable but does not overly intrude. Herbal notes. A great match with home made linguine pasta. Even though only a Rosso has a cellaring capacity of another 5 years although pretty attractive right now. Lovely wine - a superior Rosso. Had another bottle 41 weeks later on 23rd Nov 2022 with consistent notes. Excellent food wine. Drank the 3rd and last on 20th December following the 2007 Valdicava. A very good Rosso.

PnP , distinctly cinnamon beef broth on the nose.Delicate on the palate at first, nice sous bois / woodland berries. Great acidity to give lift. The Montosoli hill is damn good to us. Perfect w rigatoni, guanciale , and onion and tomatoes.

N: Beef, liquorice, some cedar, some mint, the woods.Tar and earth as it airs. P: beef, tobacco, dirt, Cherries, but neither bright nor dark, a very harmonious package, med-light on the palate but substantial. Nice fairly long finish, bright but integrated acids and gentle tannins. Perfect w linguine, tom, onion, and baby Swiss chard. As it sits and airs, no decant, the tertiary flavors and tannins get bigger.

N: Blood orange, blood, iron, herbs, underbrush. P: Blood orange preserves, Iron, blood, Hummus, tastes like Montalcino of your dreams. Light on the palate but not lacking for acidity or tannins. Can’t wait to wait on the rest. As it airs, tannins get bigger, cherries, and a certain funk.
