The Schonleber family's viticultural history can be traced back to the middle of the 18th Century and their ancestors, the Emrich family. The estate was initially used for various other agricultural pursuits before 1965, when Wilhelm Schonleber and his son Werner converted the entire estate to viticulture. They expanded the vineyards to a total area of approximately 10 hectares (25 acres). The estate's Monzingen vineyards are situated on slopes comprised of stony soils. From 1997, Emrich-Schonleber has focused on producing a series of single-vineyard Riesling wines predominantly from its 12-ha (30-acre) Monzinger Fruhlingsplatzchen plot and its 5-ha (12-acre) Monzinger Halenberg vineyard. The Fruhlingsplatzchen vineyard sits atop a mixture of red slate and gravel soils on south-facing slopes. The grapes grown here form the basis of the estate's high-quality Auslese Goldkapsel and one of its Grosses Gewachs-classified Riesling wines. The south-facing Halenberg vineyard occupies stony blue slate and quartzite soils, and makes Riesling wines that span the sweet spectrum, from Kabinett, Spatlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese to Eiswein.

Here's the Big Daddy of the #EmrichSchönleber estate and as one taster recently commented..."like liquid rocks" due to the high #slate content in the vineyard, which gives the wine its distinctive #mineral character. Again, this wine will benefit tremendously from not only further bottle aging, but also decanting or even double decanting prior to serving. #Halenberg #Riesling #GrossesGewächs #dry #trocken #Nahe

Grosses Gewachs! Dry (very dry) perfectly clean Riesling. Perfumed nose combined with citrus. Long finish ending in lemon. A complex symphony of flavors. A great but expensive wine. Someone on Delectable said another vintage would blow your mind. Mind blown!
