Château Pape Clément Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2016 (6000ml)

$1200

Chateau Pape Clement is one of the oldest properties in Bordeaux. The vineyard was first planted in the 13th century by Bertrand de Goth, the youngest son of anoble family from Bordeaux. He was the Archbishop of Bordeaux and became Pope in 1305, then took the name of Clement V. The vineyard was run by the Bordeaux Archbishopry until the French Revolution. The estate can take pride in the productionof wine in the same vineyards for over 7 centuries. In the 1980s, Bernard Magrez, an entrepreneur passionate about wine, took over the Chateau and built an international reputation for the heavenly bordeaux blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot and cabernet franc. Since he took ownership, he is dedicated to see that the amazing terroir of the Chateau continue to grow and prosper and express the refinement that has made the wines so well respected and sought after.

Drank 1/18/19 at the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux event in Miami. All wines from the 2016 Vintage. Tasting pour, no formal notes taken. Most of these wines are very tight, and will require 5-15 years to really come together. Many will likely improve a few points with time. Beautiful, well structured dark fruit. Complex, but more open than several left bank wines at this stage, as is usual for Pessac-Leognan.

Excellent craftsmanship all the way around. Excellent fruit, beautiful soft tannins, excellent acidity. Drink now but cellar and don’t miss the beauty this 16 will bring. Buy!

The surprisingly approachable 2016 is classy, full bodied and silky with inviting new oak aromatics. You get plenty of currants, mocha, orange peel, clay, black tea and toasty notes. All new oak on the 2016 vintage. The chateau has apparently decreased the level of new oak since. I don’t find it too oaky at all. Would be interesting to compare it with recent vintages. With a generous decant this wine is ready to drink already.

Deep color. A bit weighty. The aromatics were slight. Definite cherry and a lilting zip of spice. Opened up nicely after 40 minutes. Oh so smooth and good structure.
