Tenuta Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2010

$95

Pale crimson, bricking at the rim. Quite bright and leafy on the nose: an impression of tartness. Some sweet fruit on the entry, though also slightly flat in perfume, with a grainy, floury feel, then an acid crunch on the finish. Falls between the stools of thick and delicate, not quite committing to either.

Initially thought opening this might be infanticide, but at two hours open it’s superb. Cherry fig paste, rose petal, and wet brick, with licorice, thyme, and damp earth.

A bit restrained, turning to garnet color, showing dried cherries, underbrush, wet earth, herbal tones with a medium body, well integrated alcohol and subdued oak. Quite balanced but needs a little time to shine.

Dark cherry, black olive, mint, tobacco, roses on the nose. Pretty. Punchy and dense on the palate- quite tight and tannic still. With time in the glass it’s opening up to be a really lucid and detailed wine but for now the tannins and acid are quite prominent. Excellent potential but probably worth waiting a good five years before it’s really singing

Aged in French oak barrels for about 36 months, produced from 100% Sangiovese grapes, picked by hand from 20-year old vines. Powerful Ruby with ripe red fruit aromas and complex floral and spice scents. On the palate, this remarkable full-bodied wine shows cherry and berry fruit with layered spices, cinnamon, tobacco and cacao, well integrated. Savory with smooth young tannins, smoky oak notes take this wine to a rich lingering finish. Needs a few years to fully develop. Outstanding! Tasting Sample.

This is simply beautiful. Dark cherries & tobacco across the nose & palate. Loads of power, but delivered in an effortless weight. A true pleasure to drink. Surprisingly approachable for such a young Brunello.

Deep ruby color with viscous legs. Aromas of sour black cherry, tea leaves, violets, wet forest floor. Wet stone minerality, bitter dark chocolate, and similar flavors on the palate. Slight TCA on the palate, but nothing outrageous. Great finish.
