The nose is prototypical aged Cabernet, with an equal mix of mellowed cherry fruit and forest floor intermixed with sandalwood, all-spice, plum compote, lemon grass and black tea. The palate is surprisingly svelte, with a red velvet texture up front and a potent tart raspberry fruit profile. The age and oxidation live in the finish, suggesting autumn and the browning of leaves. In my experience, there are two types of aged wines; those which have shed their youthful exuberance to reveal hidden complexity and those which have relaxed into themselves to tell their story with truth and economy. This is definitely the latter. Emotionally, it takes the tension out of my shoulders and keeps me coming back sip after sip. Aged California Cabernet from the 80s and 90s are one of my favorite wine experiences and this is a lovely bit of proof .
