Rhys Horseshoe Chardonnay 2014

So good but so young. California terroir is a real thing and so is Santa Cruz Burgundy.

A nice bridge between ripe/rich white burgundy and ripe/rich Cali chard. I’ve had a few of these and really enjoyed them. These are made in a more high acidity style so they benefit from a few years of sleep...in fact, this one seemed to just be coming around. Not sharp, but zippy lemon zest over honeyed brioche and sea breeze. It’s at its most flavor packed in the middle before turning tart and mineral driven (chamomile too) at the finish. I’d imagine ‘12s and ‘13s are in the zone now.

Lemon/citrus, acid, and and interesting peach pit note. Really enjoyed this.

I thought this to be a little advanced. It was from a .375. Golden color with apple and honey on the palate, finishing on a butterscotch note.

From 375 ml - Showing darker gold color than I expected, it was disjointed at first with rich apples and a touch of nuts up front giving way to bright lemon and acid on the finish. With air it comes together well as the rich fruit wraps around a bright core of acidity that gives it both depth and agility.

Rich, butterscotch, silky texture. Meursault like. Don’t know another California winemaker making Chardonnay like this. Five years too early.

Lemon tart and a surprising marmalade-like quality. Great depth and wonderful balance. Intriguing and unique.

Tightly coiled- needs more time to come together, but still a delicious Chardonnay.
