Nicole Chanrion Domaine de la Voûte des Crozes Côte-de-Brouilly Gamay 2004

$39.99

White pepper on pungent stems crushed into granite and scattered across cassis soaked concrete. Pink peppercorns and pumpernickel partner the fragrant pucker of red currants, rose petals, and sorrel soaked white sage. Rosemary infused wild thyme liquor, with butterscotch drippings on chocolate mint leaf. Coriander pitted prunes in deep dank earth, truffles smoked, the wine spiced and just a bit baked. Black and blue brambly jam preserved with yuzu bitters. On the palate the fruits are sun-scorched and rubbed in essential herbs- like an echinacea and elderflower tincture. On the palate there is a textural play of silk and sand. The finish is weightless and feathery- misting the palate awaiting any morsel to make its savory mate.Like a person as a wine ages they get edgy but also soft and a bit worn. The flowers are wilting the fruits condition changing, all a bit weathered dried and certainly more savory and spiced. With love they open to share tales of wisdom, the wine we love for its juvenile jest now jestering us to remember our youth. No longer naive, the wine has gained strength and weight, heavier from all it has seen.

Belated Irish corned beef and cabbage dinner at Bao's 3/31/19. Perfect wine for it! Surprised how well it complemented the acidic and fatty meat and cabbage. Still fresh and lively with earthy ripe fruit notes and nice long finish. From Acker. $20. Good value still.

Remarkably alive and tasty with structure and mineral infused faded crushed flower profile that stands apart from the typical fruity picture that is Beaujolais. Yum. Good long finish revealing more of that Gamay note. Acker buy at 18.

Excited to try this well-aged Bojo, from a producer reputed to make wines that benefit from age. It’s still got surprisingly youthful color. Nose has very slightly stewed (in a good way) red fruit, an interesting sous-bois note, and the characteristic granitic minerality still there. Soft in the mouth, with that cooling tertiary flavor profile I associate with aged Bordeaux, although with friendlier fruit still there. Very interesting and enjoyable! Shout out to my bro, @Angelo Casagrande for giving this to me.

2004. What a special treat to get this sent straight from Nicole’s cellar! I can’t believe this is still available from her. Perfectly aged and ready.

Uneven and probably a little past its prime but lovely parts.
