Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas Syrah 2014

$125

Vinous, 93-95 Points: Brilliant purple. Powerful, mineral-tinged cherry and blackberry scents, along with notes of bacon fat, licorice, potpourri and pungent flowers. Pure, concentrated and energetic on the palate, offering deeply concentrated black and blue fruit flavors that gain weight and become sweeter with air. Closes extremely long, sappy and sweet, juicy acidity adding lift and cut to the blue-fruit-dominated, youthfully tannic finish.

Allowed an hour to open up. Black olives and peppercorn just leap from the glass. Amazing!

This is an all-star producer and look forward to trying this again in 10–15 years. The 14 is really beautiful, it’s rich, thick, ruby, ripe and dark. The tannins are velvety backed up with scorched earth. The violets sing at this this stage. The fruits are dark and slightly rustic. Grilled savory meats, blackberries, dark cherries, black raspberries & strawberries haunt the back palate. Graphite, dry crushed rocks, dry top soil, dry herbs, leather, tobacco with ash, round beautiful acidity, a rich, ripe, elegant, long, beautiful finish. Shouldn’t even think about opening the 14 for another 10 years plus. I would take this over the Sine Qua Non any day and be the happier given their price points.
