Great wine. I always enjoy blanc de noirs. So much more fruit and complexity!

2019 disgorgement. For being 80% Pinot meunier (and 20% Pinot noir) this sure drinks like the percentages are opposite. Whenever I’m drinking Pinot meunier heavy champagnes, I normally find a distinct gummy fruit/fruit snacks note. And while this is no Jerome Prevost La Closerie, it is in that vein of rich and espresso driven. The use of perpetual reserve (dating back to 2003) certainly helps with the richness and beautiful golden color. Golden raspberries, creamy espresso and cranberry scone aromatics. Great mousse with caramel dipped Granny Smith apple and chalky limestone highlight the palate with the kiss of nougat showing at the finish. It’s not often a meunier champagne has me intrigued, and up until recently, that short list contained Jerome Prevosts’ La Closerie, Egly-Ouriet’s Les Vignes de Vrigny and Laherte Freres’ offerings, but this Mousse Fils L’Or d’Eugene is undoubtedly in that company, especially at its price (cheaper than the others).

We enjoyed this one coming directly after “Anecdote”. A more traditional (for Moussé) blend of 80% Pinot Meunier and 20% Pinot Noir. Straw color with a persistent mousse; more bubbles than the “Anecdote”. On the nose, this is fresh, not as autolytic with bruised pear, Gala apple and raspberries. In general, this comes across more round with slightly less acid and a more subdued mineral finish. Still, quite delicious. 4g/l, Disgorged on 07092019.

More Meunier magic from Moussé. Tasted blind, you probably would not peg this as an entry level bottle. Pure gold with attractive perlage. Straight chalk and minerality on the nose immediately. Orchard fruit and black cherries along with lime slices. A nice touch of soil makes this absolutely sing. Perpetual reserve. Half of the blend is from a reserve that goes back to 2003 giving it charm and character. 80% Meunier/20% Pinot Noir with a low dosage of 3.5 g/l from Cuisles. Organic and natural methods used. Malolactic fermentation is carried out. Very pure and clean even with the earth notes. Elegant and sexy on the tongue. Racy acidity, energy, and such beautiful tension. More chalk and orchard fruits on the palate with a little yeast. Still incredibly young but it feels mature and thoughtful. Let this sit and really meditate over it. Beautiful.

This is excellent at most N/V price points, even better at just under $40. The first thing you notice is it’s weightiness from 80% Pinot Meunier & 20% Pinot Noir. Nice, bright, ripe fruits of; green apple, lime zest, Meyer lemon, grapefruit, tangerine, mix of mid & dark berries, cream, caramel, notes of melted, brown sugar, grippy chalk & grey volcanics, limestone, yeast, baguette crust, spring flowers, very lively acidity, great length, freakish balanced and smartly polished finished

Again it’s a champagne from Cédric Moussé, one of the Masters of Meunier. He’s almost single-handedly put Cuisles on the wine map. The L’Or D’Eugéne is a perfect introduction to his style. Medium gold with fast paced perlage and an attractive bouquet. Black cherries and pretty flowers combine with chalk and herbs. In the mouth, it’s racy and vivacious. Sexy and a bit thrilling with zippy acidity. 80/20 Pinot Meunier/Pinot Noir from a perpetual reserve with an Extra Brut dosage of 2 g/l. I’ve always wanted to drink this over a few days. To really let it breathe and mature in the glass. To really let it set and enjoy it over time. But I can’t. It’s just too damn good.

Punches above its weight. Fabulous aromatics. Strawberry, brioche. Palate is chalky with a plush mid that blossoms. Beautiful. Short finish and overall a bit simple overall. Extra point for QPR.
