Montevertine's Le Pergole Torte is the benchmark for the heights that Chianti Classico can achieve. Located in Radda, Montevertine estate's cooler microclimate helps explain why this is always the most ethereal Sangiovese of the region. For us, it calls to mind the grace commonly found in the Burgundies of Chambolle-Musigny. 2004 is one of the epic vintages of the last 25 years in Tuscany, and now at just over a decade this bottle has reached the next gear. it took almost 20 years, but now i taste what all the fuss is about. all that overbearing new oak sweetness is in decline and reveals beautifully structured sangiovese fruit.

Color is plenty youthful and elegant with a ruby red that gets lighter pink on the edges. The nose is a mix of primary and tertiary, with cherry, pomegranate, sandalwood, earthy forest floor and a woodsy mushroom. The palate was pure silk and refined velvety tannin, finishing long and fresh with classic bright Tuscan acidity. If you have it it's great but has legs for another 15 years easy. #montevertine #tuscany #sangiovese
