Gérard Boulay Chavignol Sancerre Pinot Noir Rosé 2014

$34

Gérard Boulay farms the famed Kimmeridgian limestone slopes of Chavignol, home to the most age-worthy and mineral-driven wines of Sancerre. He produces under 200 cases of this rosé of Pinot Noir from old vines located in a more clay-dominant parcel. The soil here works perfectly with Pinot Noir lending some weight and a rounder texture that complements the mouth watering minerality. 2014 has proved to be nothing short of an outstanding vintage in the Loire Valley. As delicious as this is today, it has the fruit and structure to age for years to come.

Super lean and chalky, "nothing in excess" as Tanzer said of the 2010...the aromatics bring to mind Cab Franc at times; there's an alluring cinnamon component in the finish. My first Boulay rosé and not the last.

I am getting more and more amazed by Boulay's wines. Once his Monts Damnée came up second in a blind Sancerre tasting that I did. Right after Cotat. The domaine was unknown to me at that point, but after tasting more of his wines it is still in the range of Sancerre domaines that I like the most. Also his rosé is just plain beautiful. Apparently his wines are not really well known in France because he never sends tasting bottles to tastings.

On the spicy side, med body with good length. Needs some cheese.

2014 subtle and appealing fruit and floral aromas with a hint of vanilla bean and a sprinkle of fresh herbs. Nicely balanced and refreshing. Longish.

Crisp and tight and fresh! Years left in it.

One of the lesser extracted roses I've tasted. A high acid structured wine that would be much better with shellfish than sipping it solo. It's decent, but I wouldn't go out of my way to seek it out again.
