A tasting of six Spatslese Rieslings from Wehlener Sonnenhur, 2008-2019. This was my #1 and the group’s #2. ABV 8.5%.

You shouldn’t ever drink Mosel this young, but what the Hölle. This has all the baby fat of a young Spätlese, with great concentration (2019 for ya) and complexity. The overriding note for me is one of orange zest, marmalade even, contributing in a big way to the gorgeous aromatics. The palate is intense, juicy, perhaps a little low in acidity but making up for it in bitter lemon-ness - or something like that. Great fun to drink now with a Thai curry, but I’ll mark this case with a big DNT (do not touch), in red ink, until 2030. 94+

Oops I did it again. Sometimes I can’t resist my go-to pairing. This 2019 Riesling did its job countering the heat from the Thai red curry. The semi-sweet and acidy helped cut the curry heat. Even the “non-white wine drinking” visiting parents enjoyed this one (#winning). Good fun drinking this one, even when this young. I would love to try an older JJ Prum, but I can’t seem to keep them around long enough. May need a change-up the next time I have Thai curry - Champagne, Rosé, Gewürztraminer??

Paired this one with spicy Thai and it worked perfectly. Racy acidity and a bushel of apples is my best description for this wine. Nicely balanced. Sweet but not overly sweet. Worth seeing how this wine evolves with age.

Riesling weekend continues. Terrific balance & freshness. Honey, apricot, jasmine. Acidity on point. Pure pleasure.
