Pax Sonoma Hillsides Syrah 2016

$47.99

A dead ringer for the Northern Rhone, this Californian syrah is complex with notes of dried blueberries, white pepper, granite, and violets. Deeply aromatic yet light on its feet.

Impressive effort. Iron, pepper, fruit and smoke.

Knowing a little bit about Pax’s vision and sharing his strong belief that California vineyards can whisper poetry, not just belt out arias, this wine is a ten out of ten because it records the whispers perfectly, California Syrah whispers of a successful immigration from the Northern Rhône.

Round two with this one...feeling about the same for better or worse.

PnP and I can’t say anything better than Galloni, but the he gave it 100pts. This is like an Islay Scotch and another Cali Syrah had a baby that is an Olympic figure skater. That, plus fermented bean curd. Such a funky nose.

100% Syrah from Griffin’s Lair, Castelli - Knight Ranch, and Walker Vine Hill. One of my very favorite producers. Super complex- purple fruit, iron, white and black pepper, licorice, wet mushrooms, and garrigue. Young for sure , but already well layered and integrated. 12.9% alcohol! Neutral oak. Full bodied with old school restraint. Also the first wine I’ve ever put in my Vitamix. Little creepy but effective.

Got swept up in the hype, and maybe I was just expecting something different. Beautifully made for sure. I need to compare this with Arnot Roberts’ Sonoma Coast Syrah and then reevaluate

Closed at first, but eventually becomes a violet-scented, almost impenetrably black, iron-laden, peppery, dark-fruited, classic Syrah
