Mount Eden Vineyards Domaine Eden Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

$39.99

Eden is well-known for its Pinots and Chards, but this Cabernet is also a knock-out, especially for the very reasonable price. It's from an unusually cool Santa Cruz site, especially for Cabernet, and the result is a wine with Bordeaux-like energy and vigor. Outstanding!

Deep garnet to ruby red. Delicious savory and meaty notes on the nose. As it opens up there is some more dark red fruits. Moderate plus tannins (7.5/10) and medium plus to full bodied. Layers of dark cocoa, a little mint, some light blueberries, and a bit savory too with herbs. Good balanced acidity and long finish. Drink till 2024.

3.5 hour decant. Dark purplish color. Wonderfully complex nose of leather, bitter chocolate, smoky green pepper, vanilla and black raspberry. Lots of acidity on front of brambly palate. Palate had more fruit and wood (oak) than the nose. Medium long finish with firm tannins. This truly tasted like a Left Bank Bordeaux from 2010. Terrific value from Santa Cruz, which baffles me.

For being a decent Cabernet Sauvignon, which is surprisingly good paring with spicy fish.

Smooth at the start, nice and dry light on the fruit. Light on the oak but still very good. Enjoyable to drink. Would certainly drink again.
