I Vigneri di Salvo Foti Vinupetra Etna Rosso Nerello Mascalese Blend 2012

“Vinupetra” is vinified from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, together with Grenache (here called Alicante) and several other grapes of unknown identity (ooh, the mystery!). Averaging a hundred years of age, the vines sit 700 meters above sea level on soils of broken-down lava stone with sand and thrive in the arid conditions and extremely changeable temperatures that characterize the mesoclimate on the north slope of the volcano.

150 year old pre-phylloxera vines. No oak. Lovely wine.

Very dark fruit and surprisingly tannic. Definitely needs some time and better the second day. I suspect it will be amazing with some age.
