I Custodi Ætneus Etna Rosso Nerello Blend 2007

$40.99

Hailing from a 2ha plot of vines up to 150 years old on the northern slope of the volcano, Aetneus is 80% Nerello Mascalese, 10% Nerello Cappuccio, and 10% Alicante Bouschet grown at 750m elevation in sandy, mineral-rich volcanic soil. The unique Etnan signature of purity, rusticity, and polish all in balance is harmonious to say the least, managing to be both rawly pulled from the earth and lushly fruited at the same time. Winemaker Salvo Foti says that that “wine is a way that we connect, not just with nature but with everything, and this bottle couldn’t be a better conductor.

Bit darker, heavier, and richer than most Etna rossos I've had. The fruit is caught between developing into something richer and more complex and remaining bright and fresh, which is an appealing combination. Lots of structure, and really a textbook example of what people mean when they liken Etna simultaneously to Barolo and burgundy. Excellent stuff.

Salvo Foti is one of my heroes. His Aetneus 2007 is a glorious bottle. Can't wait to try in 5 more years.
