Cayron makes perhaps the most classic Gigondas in the appellation, and is an excellent one to try to understand what this appellation is all about. It has the richness and longevity of Chateauneuf du Pape, but also a nice herbal touch that is reminiscent of the local garrigue.

Crystalline character to the red fruit, and while this is a large wine there is very little sense of heaviness. No heat on the finish (this makes me giddy). Dusty fine Grenache tannins. Something feral and wild, sweet skunky earthiness (the garrigue manifests as a rosemary, tarragon, sweet fennel odor that is perfectly beguiling). What a regal Southern rhone wine; what a vintage! It will be so hard not to drink these and allow then to blossom!

Dried herbs, earth, red and black fruits with hints of clove. Soft grain tannins and good acidity. A bit reduced but opens up nicely.

Jammed Black fruit with spice. Mint. Rosemary. Cocoa bean. Dust. Masa. Big weight with soft tannic structure and acid that isn't overbearing. Slight green edge that shows its youth. #wineschool

2012, Domaine du Cayron, Gigondas. Wow, big wine. Something to be said for an estate that only produces one wine and only release it when they feel it is ready. Complex with red and black fruit, lavender, red meat, herbal and a hint of black pepper. This drinks more like a Northern Rhone.
