From #magnum I was a touch concerned with the past storage conditions of this bottle based off the color, a loose structure and oxidative notes. Complexity and character were good but the structure was lacking taking away from the potential energy and length. #1998 #chateauneufdupape #chateaudubeacastel #rhonevalley #ctbucklinwine

Surprise bottle at the end of the tasting. A real treat. Garnet red with medium intensity and quite a bit of sediment. Layered nose with soft blackberries, soft black cherries, and a soft undertone of provenance herbs (lavender). Palate floats right across your tongue with some light red cherries, some toasted wood and a little leather. Still solid moderate tannins (5.5/10) and well integrated with the solid acidity. Medium to light bodied with great structure and texture. Moderate plus finish with a dryness to it. Drink till 2020.

1998 - drink up now. This is not going to get any better. Very evolved, soy sauce, barnyard, and pruny. I know this is a controversial wine but this is disappointing.

In a very good place right now. Tannins are grippy but starting to mellow. Fruit still very vibrant. Long persistent finish. White pepper, thyme, beautiful dried red fruits.

Dark ruby. Nose of plums, earth, herbs and brush. With air the wine got better in the mouth and had a finish that grew with each sip. Can get better with some additional age. Give it lots of air.

Soft, dried fruit (raisin, plum, cherry), earthy, incredibly smooth. 18 years in a bottle did this wine good!

Med ruby. Translucent but nice weight in the glass. Huge perfume with ripe plum, herbs, mocha, blueberry and a little menthol in the nose. Very round in the mouth with integrated tannins and a velvet kind of finish. Some heat. Warm fruit and high alcohol style in this. Great wine but exotic and different from old school Beaucastel.

Tar, olive tompenade, lilac, cedar, blood, and iron. Powerful perfumes on the nose and fine-grained tannins and acidity in the finish.

Glorious. Leather and raisins and dried flowers give way to dried cherries and dried flowers and leather.
