I wanted something soulful, rustic, and earthy and this hits the spot. The blend seems to accentuate every varietal in combination to create a wine that's multi-faceted and delicious. Sour cherry, red plums, clay, animal, leather, licorice, porcini, amaro spice, eucalyptus. Despite the rustic charm there is plenty of finesse guiding this along. Day 2 is showing way more savory and umami earth tones. That truffle/porcini note is forward followed by wet leather, tar, and cured meat aromas. Palate is much more supple and there's a slight balsamic note to the fruit. I love this wine.

I love these wines so much, but the bottle variance is such that from one bottle to the next, you might think you're drinking two different wines. I had one two months ago, and it showed much more of the Sangiovese; lighter, fresher, and more acid. And a week or so ago I opened one that was far more Sagrantino dominant with a heavy smokiness and much firmer tannin. Amazing wines, but definitely tricky to buy when you're not always sure what you're getting.

Rosenthal. 2009. So good. Drank over a couple hours and it just kept getting better.

With suckling pig, carrots in red wine and cumin. Still fruit-driven but with balancing tannins, well-rounded.
