Italy : Umbria : Montefalco : Cerrete : 2007 Sagrantino The Cerrete vineyard is perhaps the greatest combination of height and exposition in the appellation. The soil is similar to “Vigneto Pagliaro”, the other prime source of Sagrantino grapes for the estate, but the higher elevation and location above the cooler valley situation of Pagliaro mean the microclimate for Cerrete is a few degrees warmer, with slightly lower humidity. Fermentation begins naturally after a 45-day maceration, then the wine spends a year in steel tanks, before resting for 43 months in large oak barrels. The resulting wine is intense in nearly every aspect, with a deep violet color, robust tannins, and power that announces itself from the first aromas through the persistent finish. Despite all of this intensity, the wine is not heavy, as the terroir provides lift and elegance that enchants the senses. Only 3933 bottles were produced.

It’s big and burly needless to say but the tannins have been sanded down to a fairly finely grained structure with some bottle time. Fruit profile is big, baked and dried, with dried herbs and warm dusty earth. Surprising amount of acid. Needs a very robust food pairing but damned impressive

Wow! Just an absolute stunner. Price point is solid. This is a rich, cherry fruit based wine that is relatively silky and very approachable which is surprising given the grape. Great stuff.

Very good but too young. Tannins not balanced yet and abv too high 15%. It needs more cellaring. But all in all it is very good, fruity without being jammy, mouthfull, to join any good food. Only 4.000 bts

A great bottle of wine! With enough time this is a Gaja killer. Shared a lot of similarities. The bottle variation is fairly large but when you hit a good one, watch out!

Another EXCELLENT bottle. This is truly great juice. Needs an hour in decant but such beautiful cherry flavors in a big rustic wine.

Paola Bea super pour @Storyteller. Sublime. Soupçon of wild fennel, thyme. Cerrete is Beas' highest altitude vineyard; this, his "grand cru" Sagrantino.Thank you, Michael Alberty!
