La Marea Kristy Vineyard Albariño 2018

$26

California : Central Coast : Monterey County Albariño MEDIUM-BODIED, CRISP, BRIGHT, TROPICAL FRUITS, MINERAL, NO OAK ‘La Marea’ is the pet project of winemaker Ian Brand (of I. Brand), and shines a light on the terroir of the Monterey Bay area of California with the help of exclusively Spanish varietals. This offering is crisp, mineral driven, and packed with acidity. Fresh tropical fruits and saline show on the nose and are enhanced on the palate. Conventional

2019 vintage. Very melon-y and round. Musk melon, green pear, unripe peach, white rocks, seemingly a little weight added from either lees or minor skin contact. Very good quality, but a little steep for California obscurae.

Cal-barino is one of the best values in the wine world right now. I think Ian Brand probably makes the best.

Lime pith, ripe pear notes on the exuberant nose.... but the weight on the palate is impressive. Textured, waxy, lively acidity and a long almost saline finish. This is a food wine that can hold its own with Asian or Mediterranean cuisine and slice through the richness and complexity to make its own statement. An impressive introduction to Ian Brand and a stunning value. Kudos!

To date, this has been the best Albarino that I have had from Monterey. Highly recommended.
