Krug Vintage Brut Champagne Blend 2011

$499

FRANCE : CHAMPAGNE Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier FULL-BODIED, STEWED FRUIT, STAR FRUIT, LIQUORICE, SEA SALT, NEUTRAL OAK Julie Cavil calls 2011 "a year cut in two, with reversed seasons": record heat and drought through the spring, then record rain through the summer. Most of Champagne declined to declare the vintage. Krug declared it, and the tasting committee named the wine Spirited Roundness. Pinot Noir carried the structure at 46% of the blend, with 37% Chardonnay and 17% Meunier. Every plot ferments on its own in small old oak casks that Krug keeps deliberately neutral, so the barrel gives flexibility rather than flavor. Twelve years on the lees before disgorgement. Anne Krebiehl MW scored it 95 in World of Fine Wine and called 2011 "a triumph of blending over nature." PAIRINGS : Lamb brochettes over charcoal Krug's own pairing; the char meets the smoky middle of the palate. Lobster with drawn butter The pastry richness on the palate has the weight to carry it. Tarte Tatin Caramelized apple lines up with the stewed-fruit register.

The 2011 Vintage is a very pretty wine in this highly challenging vintage. Apricot, mint, dried herbs and a kiss of French oak open nicely in the glass. There is some of the savory character of 2011, but it is nicely woven into the wine’s fabric. To be sure, the 2011 is a slender vintage at Krug. That is especially evident in the wine's light-ish mid-palate and overall feel, yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. I expect the 2011 to be a relatively early maturing Vintage and would not push my luck on aging. Disgorged: Summer 2022. Krug ID: 322038. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, March 2024)
