ITALY : PIEMONTE : BARBARESCO SUSTAINABLE : Nebbiolo FULL-BODIED, DRIED CHERRY, VIOLET, BLOOD ORANGE, CRUSHED STONE, OAK Barbaresco DOCG sits in the Langhe hills of Piedmont — calcareous soils and south-facing slopes that are among the most prized real estate in Italian wine. Franco Serra draws from 25-year-old Nebbiolo vines throughout the appellation, hand-harvested in mid-October and fermented in stainless steel to preserve the grape's aromatic precision. The 2021 vintage was marked early by a damaging spring frost that cut yields sharply; what survived was harvested with exceptional concentration after a long, hot summer. Natale and Fabio Pesenti aged the wine for two years in oak (20% new), producing a Barbaresco with the structure to improve in the cellar and the fruit to drink well now. 91 points, James Suckling.
