FRANCE : BORDEAUX : SAUTERNES SUSTAINABLE : Sémillon FULL-BODIED, LYCHEE, CANDIED APRICOT, HONEY, GINGER, NEUTRAL OAK Castelnau de Suduiraut is the second wine of Premier Cru Classé Château Suduiraut — one of eleven estates ranked First Growth in the 1855 Sauternes Classification, now owned by AXA Millésimes since 1992. The 92-hectare estate in Preignac sits at the northern edge of the appellation, where gravelly sandy clay soils and the autumnal mists from the Ciron River drive the development of Botrytis cinerea. Castelnau is purposefully designed for early approachability: specific plots and the first-ripening selective picks are earmarked for this cuvée from harvest planning onward. The 2023 vintage was exceptional for Sauternes — rapid widespread botrytis produced concentrated, high-acid wines that reviewers compare favorably to 2021. At Suduiraut, just 12 hl/ha were harvested across three selective passes between September 18 and October 17. The 2023 Castelnau is 100% Sémillon, fermented with native yeast in oak and aged 18 months before bottling. 142 g/L residual sugar, 14% ABV. Wine-Searcher critics aggregate: 92 pts.
