Pop and pour. The nose is beautiful, the wine is awesome. No rough edges, smooth and balanced. This is how a wine should be every time you pull a cork.

At Grossi Florentino in Melbourne a week ago. Forgot to photograph the bottle so added via Search. Sandy bitter tannins as one expects from Barolo of this young age especially from a cooler year like 2012. Nose reminiscent of McBarens Plum Cake pipe tobacco which I smoked at University 45 years ago! Medium weight palate with some tar evident with earthy minerality Finishes with some austerity reflective of the vintage.

Bartolo Mascarello was the first grower I met in Piedmont. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and stayed for hours, taking about wine, politics and local gossip. At the end of the visit, Mascarello gave us a stack of hand drawn labels, like this one. Now, many years later, these wines still provide so much pleasure. This is the 2012, young, beautiful and coming together very nicely. In 2012, the Mascarello Barolo is bright, perfumes and all grace.

The nose was gorgeous, displaying sour cherry, plum, roses and violets, dusty spice, and hints of floral undergrowth.  On the palate, I found soft, lifted textures with amazing purity to it’s ripe strawberry and cherry fruits, along with inner floral tones and hints of spice.  The finish was long yet fresh with medium-grained fine tannin, dried strawberry and inner rose tones. This may not be a vintage to age for decades, it’s so beautiful already, the hard part will be saving them long enough to watch them mature. #collisioni17

Seemless young Barolo, a kiss of Brett, stones and graphite, tannins not too burly

Tasting with Alan & Maria Teresa at Bartolo Mascarello. To see the cantina in person, to learn the history and hear how ferociously it's being preserved - I am grateful for every sip I've had. And particularly this one. One of the parcels (Ruè) was pretty much decimated by hail in 2012, so it is a much smaller component of the blend than typical. A seriously elegant wine.

Still ruby centre just, with terracotta rim. Quite ripe red fruits , spiced red cherry. On the palate quite mineral , and touches of liquorice , lovely red cherry and strawberry fruit . Sweet tannin and good balanced acidity . After a while a mineral , iron filing touch. Quite open and ready for business , good to drink now and over the next 10 years .
