Giacomo Conterno Vigna Francia Barbera d'Alba 2014

$49

GUARANTEED BEST PROVENANCE: DIRECTLY IMPORTED FROM ITALY BY AIR Conterno makes powerful Barbera wines that are truly world-class wines. You pay more for these wines than other Barbera wines from the region, and after one taste you'll understand why. The 2014 Barbera d'Alba from their Serralunga Francia vineyard continues the legacy of big, mineral-driven Barbera, with ripe red cherries, plums, anise & sage notes. There's plenty of minerality and bracing (but pleasant) acidity. Much like the 2013 vintage, the 2014 release is masculine and powerful. I'd let this one rest for a few years if you can resist the tempation. Conterno fans who can't wait surely can pop the cork and enjoy. I'd pair with something rich and fatty, like an insalata di carne cruda (think steak tartare), lamb stew, grilled veal chops, or even barbecued baby-back ribs. Alcohol: 14% Bottle Size: 750 ml

Rise Over Run

World's best Barbera? Certainly a strong contender.

Less tannic and earthy but showing more fruit than in years past. Not sure how that fits the less regarded 2014 vintage? Still very rich and long and enjoyable. Almost like a barrel tasting--a good one!

A fantastic monumental wine, fullblown Barbera as I like it, nobody makes it better, always a great wine served a bit cooled.

Decanted for 30 min not enough, tannic, acid , Big Barbera. Not approachable, let it wait. 2014 vintage

Lots of juicy chewy fruits, good tannin structure. One of the best Barbera's I have ever tried.

This wine delivered! Young of course, with lots of acid and fruit, but also interesting notes of game and smoke.
