Primitivo is a close relative to California's iconic Zinfandel, but with more acidity, less sweet fruit, and more earthy complexity. This great example comes from Pulgia's Primitivo di Manduria DOC, perhaps the best for Primitivo in all Italy. This is rich, deep, and spicy, with loads of earthy black fruit and accents of carob, walnut, and spice. Enjoy this rich red with pasta, lamb, or olives!
