Peter Lauer Barrel X Saar Riesling 2015

The review below is for 2014. The 2015 is even better and simply not to be missed! "Untamed Saar Riesling with a lovely slate aroma and a very sappy and piquant taste. It is lovely juicy and sweet, but also very elegant, and a nothing but lovely type of Kabinett, although Floran Lauer does not want to name it like this because predicates are used only for sweet wines." A somewhat muted nose at this point with notes of citrus and wet stone. Juicy and quite dry on the palate with lots of minerality. Much dryer on the palate than the 2014 vintage. Light, juicy flavors of lemon, lime and a touch of peach lead to big, bright acidity and lots of crunchy wet stone and slate notes. The finish is long and very crisp with lots of bright acidity. Great sushi pairing for the evening.

Sweeter than expected. Probably paired it wrong. Might work well with something spicy.

Peter Lauer "Barrel X" from the excellent 2015 vintage...elegant, precise, tense with chipped rock and chalk minerality, loads of juicy lime, sweet ruby grapefruit, and tart apples, with pitch perfect acidity. A steal at about $20, this crushed it with seared scallops. #peterlauer #riesling #saar #mosel

Crazy good value. On the second day the slight touch of residual sugar showed a little more and it got all lime juicy. Insane acid. 10%alc

An unreasonable percentage of my expendable income goes to "fine wine", which seems the height of absurdity in light of wines like this. Could drink daily.

Gahdamnnnn this is some good Riesling. A less sweet, more nervy, pre-war style. Another stellar example of the '15 crop of Rieslings in Germany. Tense with incredible purity and focus. Pours a bright, ever-so-slightly hazy pale straw hue. Concentrated, complex nose of lime, Granny Smith apple, white peach, almost smoky crushed slate minerality, cherry blossom and jasmine floral tones, a slight beeswaxy character, and a touch of petrol as well as some slight leesiness and cardamom spice. On the palate it's more white peach, crushed slate, lime juice, beeswax, and leesiness riding on a wave of high, intense acidity. Medium (-) body with nice oily texture. Just off-dry. Impeccable balance. For under $30 this is a no-brainer. Delicious.
