Odoardi Mortilla Vigna Vecchia Macchie Savuto Gaglioppo Blend 2013

$11.99

How can such a fresh, vibrant, red come from Italy's brutally hot Calabria? Elevation helps, as does a big dose (45%) of Gaglioppo, the soft and bright grape called Arvino locally. Gaglioppo gives this bright cherry/berry fruit while Aglianico (25%) adds structure other local grapes Cappuccino perfume and complexity. A great pizza, sausage, pasta, grilled food red, especially with a chill.

Very tasty red blend of five Italian grapes, mostly Gaglioppo with significant Aglianico and Magliocco support. A great bargain at the $12 I paid.

Interesting varieties that I don't think we've had before mixed with Aglianico. Red and a little darker fruit, lush mouthfeel, old world funk, generous on fruit but in no way sweet. Reminiscent of a much more expensive Super Tuscan or a really good Nero D'avola. Will buy again.
