J Vineyards & Winery Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2013

A benchmark for creamy, nicely oak Russian River Chardonnay. You'll smell the ripeness in aromas of buttered pear, yellow apple, fresh peach and sweet oak spice. Rich, creamy, and nicely dense in the mouth where the spiced orchard fruit gets lift from a touch off lemon and depth from buttery spice. Finishes long, broad, and generous with lingering notes of salty caramel, fresh pear, and sweet spice.

Pineapple, Meyer lemon, and a whiff of laurel keynote the aromatics. The body is creamy and ample, the result of three months of malolactic sur-lie aging, and suggests lemon custard topped with ripe apricots and a sprinkling of nutmeg. Spritely acidity and the faintest hint of cypress balance the wine’s creaminess and weight, and the finish is like yellow silk. 14.3% abv | $28 (sample)

Taste is more chemical than wine. Look elsewhere.

We had the 2013 Vintage on 8/13-14/16. This is a generic California Chardonnay. There were tastes of butter, vanilla, oak, and lemon. Had a heavy mouthfeel. Too many better Chards even at this price point.

Nice Russian River chard (most of them are...nice IMO). Medium bit of oak; on the fuller bodied side with a smooth start, but a bit of a sharp finish (maybe another year or two would fix this). Liked it a lot. Nice change and fun to try something new. $31.00 at local LCBO.

Lemon cream pie. Nicely balanced. Orange peel. Buttery. Long finish. Would be great with roasted chicken.
