Still pretty young. Refined, graphite giving way to pipe tobacco and bitter chocolate but still waiting to come together. Mid-palate presence seemed jumbled.

Beautiful wine....kept getting better and better. Didn't last long enough to most likely peak!

Last week was a combo of 4th Friday and Open That Bottle Night on back to back nights. Needless to say, the lineup between both days was full of heavy hitters, so I’m only posting standout bottles. No rating. I know ‘88 wasn’t a spectacular vintage, but I was shocked at how herbal and vegetal this was aromatically. I had the ‘89 Lafite two months ago and it was superb. I kept going back and forth wondering if this was corked. I still don’t know for sure, but I do know this seemed off. Although vegetal on the nose, the palate was fairly rich and full bodied. Soft baked fruits. It was a bit muted though with zero finish.

Medium ruby , hint of garnet , slight narrower rim , more garnet hue . Quite mineral , herbal tinged blackcurrant, seaside scents . Slightly aloof and austere, though this improves with time in the decanter . However on the palate this opens up with classic cedar tinged dark fruits , blackcurrant, grafite , sea shell and saline tinged. Complex , complete , classic , grafite and mineral tinged with pretty long length finish . Still slightly grippy tannins but these are well integrated and quite polished , fresh balanced acidity. This shows very well and is just coming into its prime drinking window, this also held up very well in decanter for the 4 hours we had it open , always retaining great freshness and verve. From now and over the next 10 to 15 years perhaps .

It’s come of age nicely. Hints of cedar lush fruit. Very nice.
