Wayfarer Wayfarer Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013

$94.95

Limited new release from Pahlmeyer's new Sonoma Coast vineyard. 94 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous):  "The 2013 Pinot Noir Wayfarer Vineyard is supple, expressive and exceptionally beautiful. Plump red cherries, plums, cinnamon and rose petals meld together in a racy, effortless Pinot built on texture and nuance. Beams of acidity and minerality give the 2013 much of its energy and delineation. This is a great introduction to the wines of the property. The Wayfarer is a blend of 12 different clones from various parcels scattered across the property. The 2012 was done with 8% whole clusters." Cleo Pahlmeyer, daughter of Napa Valley's Jayson Pahlmeyer, came up with the idea to produce a stand-alone brand from the Wayfarer Vineyard on the Sonoma coast in 2012. According to the St. Helena Star, "then-Pahlmeyer winemaker Helen Turley had called the property the destined 'La Tache of California,' referring to the blessed grand cru in Burgundy." Pahlmeyer teamed up with winemaker Bibiana González Rave, formerly of Lynmar, on this project.

Very flavorful, yet balanced and pretty. Black cherry is at the fore if the expressive nose, supported by dark flowers, baking spice and orange pith. Medium to medium+ body in the mouth with fine, silky tannins and a long, lightly mouthwatering finish. Flavors are consistent with the nose, especially that core of black cherry. Drink now thru 2022+

One of the great American Pinot Noir. The nose alone was worth smelling for hours (which we did.) Bibiana is one of America's most brilliant young winemakers.

I have to say this was not my favorite. I was a little disappointed and expecting something different. On the nose I got musty closet and forest floor. Very savory even after day 2. Dusty cherries and some spice.

Deep yellow hue. Aromatic and after some time letting it breathe, citrus notes with subtle hints of exotic fruit such as pineapple and banana candy. Slight toastiness. Decent minerality, nicely textured, while heat towards the end indicated a higher alcohol level.

2nd of 3 Wayfarer pinots poured. Oddly enough it was not poured in a Pinot glass, which I found quite odd and detracted from the taste/aroma. Still a great example of the variety, but a bit tighter than the others served. Could use some more time and perhaps a brief decanting.
