Walter Hansel Winery The North Slope Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017

$42

94 Points                                Another beautiful small-production Pinot Noir from Walter Hansel who continues to make a small amount of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay down the road from Kistler, at unbelievably sane prices.  Stock up while available. 94 Points Antonio Galloni (Vinous):  "The 2017 Pinot Noir The North Slope Vineyard is one of the more voluptuous, racy wines in this range. Ample and creamy, with tremendous resonance, the 2017 has a lot to offer. Plush fruit and silky tannins add to the wine's considerable immediacy and overall appeal." Robert Parker: "...Some of the best values in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir emerge from Stephen Hansel’s winery in the Russian River Valley.  All of the Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs are bottled unfiltered.  This is a source for very fine Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs at some of the most realistic prices to be found in Northern California."

The 2017 Hansel North Slope pinot has a huge, sweet, fruit bomb of a nose and is a translucent, rusty purple in the glass. It’s light on the palate to start but the back end kicks in. Dried cranberry, earthy, mild tannins and acidity. A slightly vegetal finish though. Some room to age

What a huge wine all around. From nose to finish. This is the epitome of the finest California Pinot. As good as any of the Gran Crue’s. I am enjoying it with some wonderful short ribs. Sure would like to find a case or two this this gem.

Cherry candy nose with hints of basil. Raspberry and cherry with a nice core of spice, star anise and clove

Another Hansel Pinot, this is the North Slope and it’s excellent. Loads of initial rhubarb aromas and the palate is fruity, lighter on the smoke and really smooth with some aniseed and cherry on the finish with light tannins. I think this is 0.1 better than the Cuvee Alyce but both are very enjoyable and recommended.

Delicious. Very fruity. Got a lot of strawberry and vanilla with faint hints of some oak and tobacco. You can tell it was aged extremely well, just right for the wine it is.
