Turley Rattlesnake Ridge Howell Mountain Zinfandel 2014

$65

94 Points Parker                             Very limited Turley Zinfandel. previous vintage 95 Points Robert Parker: "Turley has always excelled with high-elevation sites on Howell Mountain. From a site at 2,600 feet, the Zinfandel Rattlesnake Ridge (15.6% alcohol) is a beauty, with floral notes intermixed with cool, bluish fruits, raspberry, forest floor and spice all present in this dense, ruby/purple wine that cuts a broad swath across the palate. Like all of these wines, despite the high-octane alcohol, there is not a sense of heaviness or burn. This is beautiful, pure, rich, multidimensional Zinfandel to drink over the next 7-8 years. It is a beauty." All told there are seven Zinfandels from Napa Valley, ranging from Atlas Peak in the south, to Howell Mountain in mid-valley, to the estate vineyard just north of St. Helena. As one might expect, all of these are remarkable Zinfandels.

Big, brawny Howell Mountain Zin. Shows great depth despite its fruit forward focus. Nose is something special - highly perfumed with a hint of cotton candy. Great mix of power and finesse.

BBQ ribs, collard greens, coleslaw, and wasabi mashed potatoes. And Turley Rattlesnake Ridge Zin. A perfect Memorial Day dinner.

This is everything you would expect from a California Zinfandel. I am still honing my blind tasting skills but this one is such a classic I feel I could identify this quite readily in a blind tasting.

First night was kind of meh. High octane and kind of generic primary flavors but started to open up in glass after about 30 minutes. On day two, it was markedly improved with much more secondary character albeit more barrel flavors also. Smoke, spice, vanilla on top of briar and brambles. Overall it is very good after allowing to unwind a bit.
