Very limited Turley Zinfandel. 92 Points Robert Parker: "As with the Juvenile bottling, the Turley 2022 Zinfandel Old Vines punches above its weight in this vintage. The nose is considerably deeper, fuller and more polished, opening with aromas of crushed plums, wild berry preserves, tobacco leaves and similar autumnal accents to its younger sibling. The palate is light- to medium-bodied, carrying through the polished quality of the nose and melds it with a subtly dusty tannin structure and bright acidity. The finish is straightforward and easy to drink, offering generous layers of fruit, spice and floral notes." ...One of California's great wineries, Larry Turley's Turley Wine Cellars continues to play a critical role in safeguarding the Golden State's viticultural heritage, saving old, head-trained and sometimes own-rooted vineyards from destruction. With fully 29 different bottlings, Zinfandel (often complemented by small amounts of other co-planted varieties, such as Carignan and Grenache) is the standard-bearer here, though Turley also does a fantastic job with other varieties, most obviously Petite Syrah. Given how distinctive each of the single-vineyard bottlings is, it's tempting to suggest (though some will no doubt think it heretical) that Zinfandel might be the variety best adapted to expressing "terroir" in California."

The 2022 Old Vines Zinfandel brings together many historic California vineyards that don’t provide enough fruit for Turley to make a single vineyard bottling. Traditionally, it’s one of the great buys in CA wine. This year’s release (10/24) is a dusty ruby color with a nose rich in red berry, cherry and earth. It’s smooth and light — fresh, even — with bright acidity, mild tannins and a strawberry finish. However, it’s not as concentrated as some years and perhaps some more time in the bottle will bring out the deeper elements.
