Turley Kirschenmann Vineyard Zinfandel 2014

$59.99

Very limited Turley Zinfandel. 92 Points Robert Parker: "Winemaker Tegan Passalacqua’s family owns the Kirschenmann Vineyard in Lodi, and the Zinfandel Kirschenmann Vineyard (15.2% alcohol) is yet another Turley offering that wants to transport the taster to the Southern Rhône Valley of France. Yet it is more than the powers of suggestion that the aromas of raspberry, kirsch liqueur, earth, spice and pepper are all present in this wine, made from head-pruned, ungrafted vines. This is a juicy, up-front, full-bodied yet elegant Zinfandel to drink over the next 5-6 years. ."

Deep ruby red with high intensity. A little jammy on the nose to start with bramble berries, gun powder, and some damp forest notes. Day two added to the complexity with a toasty element as well as baking spices like cinnamon and light red berries. Moderate plus tannins (7.5/10) and full bodied. Very jammy with lots of super dark dried berries and sticks. Beautiful on day two and completely smoothed out. Long finish. Drink till 2024.

The wine is lovely, with red fruit, lavender and pepper spice on the nose and a palate that is deep and rich with those qualities as well as a savory herbal mint note that runs deep. The tannins are silky smooth and the finish is long and languid. The fainting couch on which I sat at our friend's home was perfect, for I felt I might give way at any moment. It’s a $60 wine that earns its price tag.

Rainy day wine while braising pork shoulder. Sensual and elegant expression of zin. Floral, spicebox, cracked black pepper, powdered sugar, raspberry jam, cooked cranberries, cherry compote, sweet wood. Juicy and rich fruits balanced by fresh acid and fine tannins. Perhaps making it up but I feel like there is a sand-like mineral taste/texture to the wine, like getting sand in your mouth at the beach but more delicious. Fantastic juice that is balanced and ethereal. Own-rooted, silica based sands, planted in 1915.

I'd rate this a little higher than the critics. Not as dark and big as their other wines, but this is very nice.

Wow, this is a superlative Zin, bouncing flavors off the tongue and palate, swirling through the nose. How do they do it?

An enticing bouquet reminiscent of liqueur. Strawberry fruit generously coats the palate, with a slight backdrop of game, ending with pepper notes. The finish is long and velvety. This is unlike most full-throttled Zins, and is restrained and delicate, if not elegant. Quite impressive.
